Sandra's Soliloquy

Friday Reflection – 22nd March 2024

Sandra’s Soliloquy

Greetings Friends

I am still a bit spaced out and fatigued having enjoyed a Quiet Day at Crowland Abbey last Saturday.

But it was worth it. The sun shone and I loved driving across the Fens, from Whittlesey, with the B1040 finally being free of flood water. I knew I was pushing myself, however, having previously found Quiet days extremely helpful and rewarding in the past, I hoped I would be fit to attend.

Our Peterborough Circuit have enjoyed Quiet Days in the past, and the one in 2011, was life changing for me. It is part of my history and story. At another, at Ailsworth, we learned of the discussions and plans afoot for setting up the Light Project and the Garden House, which was very encouraging, and a privilege to pray for it. I think the Light Project has now celebrated 5 years, and have helped so many people living on the streets into work, homes, with advice and practical help with paperwork, some returning to their home countries.

So, I always approach these days with anticipation and gratitude for spending time with God, away from home and on this occasion in a beautiful Abbey where centuries of pilgrims have worshiped.

I’ve shared before our family has an affinity with the Abbey, many ancestors being buried in the graveyard, and my Grandfather spending his childhood in Crowland, leaving for London aged 20. I was keen to feel close to ancestors and other pilgrims within the Abbey and grounds. You can always rely on meeting lovely people too at these events, and they are special occasions.

I was thrilled to spend a lot of time outside, taking many photos of the amazing ruins, and eating my picnic lunch. I’m always able to sit in silence and absorb the sights and sounds of nature.

One of the deepest and meaningful parts of the day, was a conversation with a young man and his dog in the grounds. I was sitting on my walker, on my own, amongst the ruins. I watched as this very tall, young man and his staffy dog, approached. Momentarily, I felt vulnerable. But thankfully, the Holy Spirit intervened and I greeted them both warmly. I think we all relaxed. I admired his beautiful dog and asked if there was a name for her colouring? He said, ‘Oh she’s unique.’

What an opening. I said, ‘as we are too. We all are.’

He asked if my boots were Dr Martens and admired them.

I have an excuse now for my many coloured pairs of boots, as quite a number of people commented on them. They are a conversation opener! Saturdays were red patent boots, with leopard print tops.

As he left, I told him it had been lovely meeting him and his dog, and he thanked me, and said likewise. We wished each other a good day.

I have smiled all week about this opportunity. Other moments from the day might crop up in coming weeks, or further down the line.

Dear Lord, we thank You for those special moments in ancient places of Worship where we feel a part of centuries of people with faith. We are grateful for times away from our daily life, where we can concentrate on You, listening and being in Your Presence. Thank you for those brief but meaningful encounters with strangers. Help us to be aware even more of others with Easter just around the corner. Give us opportunities to be witnesses of our Faith. We Praise and thank You heavenly Father. Amen

Please share concerns and prayers. God Bless everyone.

A new song I heard this week.
